We’re a small, family-owned optical boutique built around expert fitting, independent eyewear, an in-store lab, and the belief that glasses should never feel one-size-fits-all.
We take the time to understand your vision, your prescription, your lifestyle, and your personality. Then we help you find eyewear that actually works for all four.
Before opening Optique Unique, Master Optician Barry Montalto spent 18 years managing optical labs for national chains, managed-care labs, private practices, and independent opticians.
He saw the optical business from almost every angle.
And that experience showed him exactly what he wanted to do differently.
Make the store feel human.
Comfortable. Welcoming. Personal. Never rushed.
You should be able to ask questions, try things on, change your mind, laugh a little, and leave feeling confident about what you chose.

Great eyewear is about much more than picking a frame from a wall.
Prescription, lens design, frame size, bridge fit, measurements, materials, finishing, and adjustments all matter.
That’s why we combine independent eyewear, advanced lens technology, careful measurements, and our own in-store optical lab.
Take kids seriously.
Children deserve more than a scaled-down version of the adult optical experience.
We’ve made pediatric eyewear a major part of Optique Unique, with patient fittings, durable and comfortable frames, complex prescription expertise, sports eyewear, sensory-friendly care, and plenty of personality.
Because glasses kids actually like wearing work a whole lot better.

24 Years in Metuchen. Still Independent.
Optique Unique opened in Metuchen in 2002 with a pretty simple idea:
Do excellent optical work. Carry interesting eyewear. Treat people like people.
Twenty-four years later, we’re still here, still independent, and still doing things our own way.
We live and work in this community. We’ve watched little kids become teenagers, teenagers become adults, and parents come back with the next generation.
Some families live around the corner.
Others drive more than an hour to see us.
We don’t take either one for granted.

Our In-Store Optical Lab
Your glasses aren’t simply ordered and handed over.
We cut, edge, inspect, adjust, repair, and hand-finish lenses in our Metuchen optical lab.
Having the lab in-house gives us more control over the finished result and lets Barry handle the details that can make the difference between glasses that are technically correct and glasses that actually feel right.
Especially with complex prescriptions, specialty lenses, children’s eyewear, and difficult fits, those details matter.

Barry brings decades of hands-on optical and lens experience to every fitting.
He specializes in difficult prescriptions, high prescriptions, progressive and specialty lenses, pediatric eyewear, myopia-management lens fitting, and those tricky situations where someone has heard:

Sometimes they don’t.
Sometimes the frame, measurements, lens design, or fitting simply needs another set of experienced eyes.
